Kewanee Boiler Parts- Pilot Assemblies
Pilot Assemblies provide a very similar function in an industrial boiler that a spark plug provides in an automobile engine- it ignites the main flame once the boiler's operating controls call for heat. Generally operating with gas- either natural gas or LP gas- the Pilot ignites the realtively small pilot gas flow with an electric spark, produced by the Electrode. Once the boiler's flame safeguard control detects the presence of the pilot flame, it will permit the main fuel valves, either oil or gas, to open so that the main flame is ignited.
On occasion, Kewanee boilers were provided with direct spark pilot assemblies which operate on #2 diesel fuel rather than gas, and eliminate the need to keep an LP gas cylinder on hand just for pilot use.
Kewanee Pilots and Electrodes:
As you may have found, there are a number of websites which offer Kewanee Pilot Assemblies and Kewanee Electrodes. Unfortunately, they present these Pilots as being of a standard style for a particular Kewanee burner size ("P", "F", "A", "AA", etc). This is not the case. The Kewanee-designed and built burner went through numerous and frequent design changes, especially during the years 1985-1995, whic affected both Pilot and Diffuser design and usage.
Only Burton Mecanical has the original Kewanee Engineering and Sales Order records to be able to determine exactly which Pilot was used on your boiler as-shipped from the Kewanee factory. For more information on how this came about, see .
